Amazing and Incredible Places In Europe
Reading Time: 6 minutes
This stunning landscapes below are not at the end of the world, but are all in corners of our own Europe. What better way to explore Europe than by unearthing its secret spots, and head to places such as Portugal, Norway and even Spain to explore these enchanting places.
Meteora
WHERE: Thessaly Greece
Those precipitous, mist-shrouded, monastery-topped sandstone columns you’re looking at aren’t in Bhutan or Tibet. Nope, they’re in far more accessible Greece, in the foothills of the Pindus mountains. While the religious complex of Mount Athos is the country’s most hallowed, these ‘suspended rocks’ (as the name translates to) are arguably more breathtaking. Hermit monks first started scaling the pillars around the 10th century as a way of avoiding invading Ottomans. By the late 16th century there were 24 monasteries dotted across the rocks, though only six remain today. Their fresco-heavy enclaves – as well as a number of dinkier ruined monasteries and hermitages – can all be visited by organised tour.
Kravice
WHERE: Bosnia and Herzegovina
There’s so much to do in this amazing part of the world, but these mini-Niagaras, consisting of 25m-high (82ft) cascades, should be at the top of your to-do list when you’re in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Come in the summer and you can swim in the pools.
Dinant
WHERE: Belgium
Luckily for you, very few people have heard of Dinant. Great to visit at any time of the year, the lovely little town was the birthplace of Adolphe Sax, the jovial inventor of the saxophone. Musical history aside, the area is great for those seeking a spot of solitude or a hiking holiday there’s more than 2,000km (1,243mi) of signposted trails.
Kylemore Abbey
WHERE: Ireland
A nation steeped in heritage and history, Ireland, just like Scotland, is blessed with amazing natural beauty. And set amidst this beauty is Kylemore Abbey. Built in the 1800s, it was meant to be a private home for Mitchell Henry. He built the home to be an ode to modernity, Ireland, and his beloved wife. Today, this quiet little place, just an hour away from Galway, is attracting peace-seekers.
Kylemore Abbey also has the largest walled garden in Ireland called Victorian Walled Garden. This is quite a romantic destination, where you can enjoy quiet meals at their cafe, buy gifts at the gift shop, or take walks along the lake. It is quite an experience.
Faial Island
WHERE: Portugal
Faial Island is famously known as Blue Island. It is home to only 15,000 inhabitants, making it a peaceful island. Most homes are painted in various shades of blue, hence, the name. The beaches have soft sand, and the sunset view is unforgettable. This idyllic place is still not very well known, so plan a vacation here and enjoy the virgin beauty of Faial Island.
The Pink Lake Of Torrevieja
WHERE: Alicante Spain
This Instagram-famous lake has three times the pink power of your bog-standard rose-tinted waterway: twice, because it’s actually two lakes, and thrice, because a flamboyance of flamingos hang around and feast on the algae-rich shrimp that live there. Its eye-catching bubblegum hue is conjured up by the presence of salt bacterium and micro-algae, which mix together to make the lake look like a scoop of melted strawberry ice cream. But who cares about the science: it looks cool, and the warm water’s high salt concentration means swimmers can float about easily.
Gouffre De Padirac
WHERE: Occitanie France
In the Dordogne region, right in the middle of France, at the edge of a huge national park, is an entrance to the centre of the Earth. That’s how it might feel when you’re gazing into the Padirac cave, one of the largest chasms in Europe, and a geological wonder that has to be seen to be believed. But the hole is just the beginning – once inside, take a boat ride along the 100m-deep river and check out the spectacular limestone rock formations twisting and dripping above the eerily still ‘Rain Lake’. “You must go in without fear,” said Édouard-Alfred Martel, 19th-century explorer of the caves – “who knows what surprises await you.” You first, then…
Trolltunga
WHERE: Hordaland, Norway
WHAT Rugged Nordic icon and absolute terror to the vertiginous, Trolltunga, literally ‘troll’s tongue’ is a spit of rock jutting out of a mountain, with a 700m drop to Ringedalsvatnet lake below (there are no rails). Reaching it isn’t easy: it’s a tough hike even after you’ve driven four hours from Oslo, but utterly worth the schlep for the ludicrously beautiful panoramas of shining waters, mossy crags and snow-covered peaks. Lots of places claim to have the kind of scenery seemingly drawn straight from the pages of a fantasy novel, but this is the real deal. Just don’t look down.
Isle of Skye
WHERE: Scotland
Everyone knows that Scotland is home to some of the most beautiful natural avenues. However, barring a few famous places, not much is known about Scotland. Therefore, it’s no surprise that you might not know about the Isle of Skye.
The Isle is 80 km of rough terrain, jagged sea cliffs, narrows, and postcard-worthy fishing villages that will take your breath away. Here, you will feel the solitude you’ve been seeking for. Despite the seclusion, there are a few good hotels here that will cater to you a comfortable stay. So, for a great escape, Isle of Skye is the ideal location.
