At the heart of the city lies the River Douro, its steep banks blanketed with narrow, tawny-roofed houses, medieval stone walls and weathered church towers. On sunny days by the river, diners tuck into local cuisine like fresh octopus salad, bacalhau (codfish) and bottles of remarkably good value, delicious Douro wine. But the city’s star export is port, and a guided tour around one of the many cellars (tasting included) is highly recommended. Just cross the river via the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia, where historic port wine producers line the Ribeira (waterfront), alongside old merchant houses and cafés.

In addition to fine food and wine, Porto abounds with astounding architecture and interiors, like the atmospheric Lello Bookshop, with its neo-Gothic façade and Art Deco, wood panelling interior; the staircase is the star attraction, constructed out of carved wood, clad in crimson velvet and said to have inspired regular customer, J. K. Rowling, in writing Harry Potter.
Furthermore, Porto’s topography means that a breathtaking view is never far away – grab a cold drink and head to Calçada das Virtudes for some of the best city vistas.
When to go?
Porto is at its best in summer, when glorious sunshine and an exciting cultural programme bring in the punters. For a quieter getaway, head there in May or September – but pack a waterproof jacket, as the city is known for its rainy climate.
