Mini guide to the History City of Machico
View of Machico Bay, Madeira Island, Portugal

Nicknamed the Garden Island, Machico is perfect for travellers looking for a place to spend some time in the great outdoors. Hike one of the island’s mountainous trails, participate in some beachside watersports, spend an afternoon horseback riding, or check out one of the island’s diving hotspots – each season offers a new part of nature for you to experience.

It’s not too cold to take a trip to the beach during the winter in Madeira

Found on the eastern side of the secluded island of Madeira, Machico’s climate is pretty consistent – and that includes winter, where temperatures average out at a pleasant 17°C. Equally pleasant is exploring the city’s charming old quarter and the soft sand of the curving crescent beach, and thanks to the fact it never gets too hot you’re in the perfect position to try your hand at some of Machico’s adventurous activities. Walking along the local levada aqueducts is a great way to experience Madeira’s mountainous terrain, and you can even head underground and visit the unique caves known as the Furnas do Cavalum.

Spring

Spring may be Machico’s coolest season, but it’s perfect for outdoor activities

Perhaps it Madeira’s far-flung position in the North Atlantic Ocean that makes its springs so mild. Although it’s actually (and surprisingly) the coolest season of the calendar in Machico, you’ll still receive a warm welcome and balmy temperatures that gradually rise as April turns into May. And with a nickname like the Garden Island, it follows that Madeira’s lush terrain is absolutely spectacular throughout the spring. Take full advantage with a hike or horse riding, or hire a car to enjoy the breathtaking views and landscapes while tackling the island’s winding country roads.

Visitors can indulge in some classic coastal pursuits during the summer

Like any top summer holiday destination, Machico has some fine beaches where visitors can indulge in some classic coastal pursuits. Praia da Calheta offers sand, sunshine and a great view over the marina and sea wall, while the island’s natural basalt beaches provide an intriguing change of landscape with their other-worldly black pebbles. Whichever beach you choose, you’ll often find a range of water sports and activities on offer, and Machico’s marine reserve offers some fantastic diving if you want to head under the waves and meet Madeira’s underwater wildlife.

Fall

Don’t miss your chance to hike the city’s lush mountainscape during autumn

Great news if you’re looking to top up your tan in autumn – Machico’s climate stays temptingly summery all the way through to October, meaning you’ll get to enjoy sun, sea and sand without the bustle of the busy season. And while the beach’s array of activities and water sports might take up a good chunk of your time, don’t neglect the island’s other delights. The diving and snorkelling is particularly good, but for a unique Madeiran experience you should try a levada walk. These aqueducts weave their way through the mountains, and following one is a fantastic way to appreciate the lush landscapes of the island’s interior.
