A Seasonal Guide to the Smart Brussels
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Brussels may be known as a hub for international politics, but there’s much more to the city than just diplomacy. Wandering through the winter markets with a hot chocolate in hand, taking in the beauty of the “Carpet of Flowers” at the Grand Place, escaping the summer heat in a chic bar, or taking in some cultural at one of the city’s 85 museums are just some of the wonders that await you in the Belgian capital.
Winter
Brussels kicks off the winter season with an annual winter festival
The cold of winter seems to suit the understated elegance of Brussels, and the Belgian capital looks all the more inviting with a thin layer of glittering frost on its stately buildings. Each year the city throws a huge winter festival where you can head out onto an ice rink or indulge in some snacks and shopping at the market, which boasts over 200 stalls. It can get quite cold in the winter months though – a great excuse to pop into one of Brussels’ fantastic museums or indulge in a big mug of Belgian hot chocolate!
Spring
Every two years the Grand Place is transformed by the ‘Carpet of Flowers’
After the chilliness of winter, spring heralds a welcome return of colour to the squares and parks of Brussels. Lush green grass and vibrant flowerbeds spring up around the Belgian capital, and every two years the Grand Place is transformed by the ‘Carpet of Flowers,’ a stunning floral display that utilises hundreds of thousands of plants. Nature and greenery will be at the heart of any spring in Brussels, and a visit will make you feel as fresh as the city’s gardens in full bloom.
Summer
The city pops with colour during the summer months
From the chic and stylish bars of the Place du Châtelain to the opulent museums and guildhalls of the Grand Place, the whole of Brussels sparkles in the summer. It’s not just that the city looks stunning in the sunshine either – there’s loads of activities and events to enjoy. The Brussels Summer Festival offers 10 days of music in the heart of the city, and if you feel a bit tired after all that dancing there’s always Belgian chocolate to help top up your energy…
Fall
The cooler fall days are perfect for exploring the city’s bountiful greenspaces
Autumn is the ideal time to take to the streets and explore the museums of Brussels. At the last count there were over 85 to choose from, taking in everything from 14th Century painting to modern-day comic books. But there’s more to Brussels in autumn than culture! If the weather’s on your side and you’re feeling energetic, the Promenade Verte runs right around the city. It’s a great way to take in the green spaces of Brussels in all their autumnal glory.
