The Largest Lake In Europe Is Underground

Not everyone knows this but there is a huge underground lake in Europe. Let’s see where it is and how to visit it. It is located in a small village in the Swiss Alps in an area that is famous for the wine production, here is produced the Fendant which is made only with the grapes that are harvested in this area.

St. Leonard The Underground Lake

Explored for the first time in 1943, discover one of the most fascinating underground site. The subterranean lake of St-Leonard is located in Switzerland, along the Rhone valley, between Sion and Sierre in the heart of the Swiss Alps. With a length of around 300 meters this is the largest natural underground lake in Europe which can be explored by boat.

After the entrance you have to walk 50 steps you find yourself on a jetty, with waters of the continent’s largest natural underground lake stretches out in front of you. Its total area is approximately 6,000 square meters, and the water stays at an average temperature of 11 degrees Celsius (52 degrees Fahrenheit). The water is so very still that every drop hitting the surface can be heard distinctly in the cave. During a 30 minutes boat trip on the cristal clear water, you will enjoy the peace of this amazing place while your guide gives you all explanations about the underground lake.

Though the cave has been open for some time, an accident took place in the winter of 2000. A two-ton heavy rock fell from the ceiling into the lake. As a result, the cave was closed by the authorities for repairs and to ensure its safety. Having reopened in 2003, the lake has welcomed tourists ever since. Nowadays, visiting the cave consists not only of the boat ride. You can also read the various information boards in the waiting area before or after your boat ride.
