The Great Ocean Road is one of the most spectacular scenic drives in the world. Built in more than 13 years by over 3,000 Australian soldiers. If you want to explore the road the most challenging involves carrying gear, pitching a tent, and cooking over a campfire. But you can opt for an easier way. Several walking companies, both local and international, offer fully or semi guided three to seven day itineraries inclusive of food, accommodation, and luggage transportation. Alternatively, you can plan a day trip from Apollo Bay or Port Campbell to cover the track’s sightseeing highlights.

Here is a selection of unmissable stops:

  • Apollo Bay. It is the starting point of this road and this “walk” in Australia. Here, step by step, you can come across kangaroos, koalas and even penguins!
  • 12 Apostles. There are 12 rock towers that leave all visitors breathless. The 12 apostles are among the most famous natural attractions in all of Australia with their 45 meters high and with their very ancient origin: almost 15 million years ago. If you want to see them from above, you can take a visit by helicopter, an experience of pure adrenaline.
  • Cape Otway. Traveling along the Great Ocean Road you will reach an eco-sustainable estate, the Great Ocean Ecolodge where researchers use their strength and time to help all endangered animal and floral species in order to conserve their natural habitat.
  • Torquay. It is the sacred place for surf lovers and along this famous road you cannot miss a visit to the largest museum entirely dedicated to this discipline, the Surfworld Surfing Museum.
  • Timboon. Another stop recommended for the delight of the palate is Timboon, home to some of the best whiskeys and spirits. Here you can find many producers to taste their products.

How to Get

You can start from Melbourne, which is 95 kilometers away from Torquay. But There is another way: fly into Avalon Airport near Geelong, which is much closer to the start of the road. There is car hire there.

Line buses run from Geelong along the Great Ocean Road as far as Apollo Bay three times a day on Monday to Friday and twice a day on Saturday to Sunday.
