Polignano the best romantic place to go

Polignano a Mare is a town in the Province of Bari, Puglia, located on the Adriatic Sea. Arguably one of the most romantic spots in the region, a craggy slice of land with several caves, for that Polignano is famous throughout the world for cliff diving. Along with the rich history, Polignano is known for world-class cliff-diving opportunities, having previously hosted the Red Bull diving competition.

Grab a drink in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II

Every Italian town has a main square, and this is Polignano’s. Busy in the warmer months of the year, it’s still a wonderful place to grab a morning coffee or an late afternoon aperitif and watch the world go by!

Hunt Down the Spectacular View Points

Throughout the old town, you will find impressive viewpoints where you can look out over the sea, or strolling in the alleys or reaching the points overlooking the cliff that are supporting the precariously perched old town. Photographs taken at these viewpoints eventually helped bring Polignano a Mare to the forefront of Puglia’s tourism scene.

Go On the Beaches

There are very spectacular beaches on Polignano a Mare, where you can go to relax yourself or to explore the the numerous caves. The most known are:

Lido Cala Paura is a small beach in the center of Polignano a Mare. It is amidst rocks with caves and submerged grottoes to explore. It is useful to take a pair of shoes for the sea with you because there are stones under the water.

Another amazing beach is Lama Monachile is located just outside the centre of the town. Here, there is a nice beach made of pebbles with a crystal clear emerald waters. It is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches of Polignano mainly for its location below the old town and the surrounding high cliffs. 

Only 1,6 Km ( about 20 minutes on foot ) from the center of Polignano a Mare theri is Ponte dei Lapilli beach, a beach of larger pebbles and stones named for the bridge that backs it. A rocky reef borders it, where you can sit or lay in the sun. The rocks make it a good spot for beginner snorkelers. It is just a few steps off Via San Vito, so it is easily accessible. There are no vendors or services here but it is near restaurants and cafes.

Another beach is Cala Cavallo is located north of Cala Ponte. It is a quite small sandy beach, of free access and ideal for families. Cala Cavallo can be reached by taking via San Vito from Polignano a mare. The beach is located immediately after the port of Polignano a Mare.

Check Out the Contemporary Art Museum

Near the coast, there is the spectacular Museum of Contemporary Art, this is the only contemporary art museum in Puglia; a part of a permanent collection, there are also temporary exhibitions and the Pino Pascali competition.

In fact the museum is dedicated to the artist Pino Pascali who was born in Polignano a Mare but sadly died at the age of 32 in 1968. Pascali was famed for his minimalistic style of contemporary art and created many famous statues and other forms of art, many of which are now on show at the museum.

How to Get

Is not very easy to reach Polignano a mare if you don’t have a car but the Village is so beautiful and worth a visit.

By plane

From the Bari airport (48 km) take the shuttle for the central train station in Bari. Take the train to Brindisi and get off in Polignano a Mare. From the Brindisi airport (83 km) reach the Brindisi train station by shuttle. Take a train to Bari and get off in Polignano a Mare.

By car

From highway A14 (Bologna – Taranto) and A16 (Napoli – Bari) reach Bari and exit to Bari nord (North). Follow the signs to downtown Bari, Brindisi, Lecce. Continue to Brindisi on the SS 16 and exit to Polignano a Mare nord (North). From Brindisi take the SS16 to Bari and exit at Polignano a Mare / Conversano.

By train

There are trains leaving Bari every 30 minutes.
