Discover an amazing different Puglia

Puglia is not only Trullo, Ostuni o ear-shaped pasta and olive oil! Scurry along from the tourist honeypots of Lecce and Bari to find rugged, fjord-like bays, coves with clear and crystalline water, and a sun-baked landscape out of the chaos.

The southern Italy region of Puglia, the heel of the boot, has many unique and historic places to stay. We’ve stayed in a number of interesting places and these are a few of our favorites.

There are places in this world that will capture your imagination and force you to book a plane ticket there- Puglia is one of them.

Rodi Garganico

Rodi Garganico is a town in the province of Foggia, Puglia.  Called as “Giardino del Gargano” for its extension characterized by the presence of numerous citrus groves, fig trees, olive trees, carobs and pines which represents a very suggestive landscape.  Many visitors come to Rodi Garganico primarily because of its coastal location, with extensive sandy beaches that regurarly get awarded the Blue Flag award for cleanliness and facilities. These beaches, each around four kilometres long, run along the coast both sides of the town, which itself stands on a raised promontory above a harbour. You can also visit the center of Rodi

Locorotondo

Locorotondo is a very pretty town perched on top of a hill in Val D’Itria, Puglia. This is a town to simply get lost in for a few hours. To leave the new town and enter the old, to wander tiny streets, to sit in the sun and sink a couple of aperol spritz, perhaps peruse one of the of many beautiful ateliers or dine fuori at one of the impossibly cute side-streets restaurants , but mostly, to just enjoy. Visit the Lungomare that is perched atop a big hill, Locorotondo is a fantastic place from which to survey the spectacular countryside around. Whilst views can be garnered from many spots in the city, for the very best vistas head to the limit of this hill-top town (easy to find in the small centro storico) and the small street that encircles its highest point. Known somewhat confusingly as the ‘lungomare’, despite being quite some distance from the sea, this route offers spectacular panoramic views of the valley below, with vineyards, olive groves, an trulli.

Locorotondo is close to a tourism powerhouse, Alberobello, capital of trulli, and maybe because of this is largely overlooked by mass tourism, but this is perhaps a fortune, because in this way you can admire an enchanted place without stress, without crowds.

Torre Guaceto

Torre Guaceto is a Nature Reserve and Protected Marine area located on the Adriatic Coastline, in the area of Upper Salento and between Ostuni and Brindisi City. Its name originates from the sighting tower that is part of the system of coastal sighting towers built by Charl V to protect the regional territory from potential marine attacks.

Many people visit the Reserve and the Marine Area to study and observe their fauna and flora. The vegetation diversity of Mediterranean Maquis and the number of different animal species offer the opportunity to enjoy many naturalistic sports. Birdwatching, snorkeling and sea watching, trekking, cycling, hiking, and walking across the reserve are some of the many activities to do in the Torre Guaceto area.

Furthermore, for the sandy beaches and sun addicted, the Torre Guaceto’s beach “Punta Penna Grossa” is a must to enjoy and relax in, and maybe you’ll also be lucky to meet up a beautiful giant sea turtle.

 Pescoluse

Located in the far south of Puglia, Pescoluse is one of the region’s premier beach destinations. Celebrated as the ‘Maldives of Puglia,’ the fine white sands and idyllic azure waters are positively heavenly. With a length of over 5km, it’s perfect for long relaxing walks at sunrise or sunset, or for jogging along the Ionian seashore. For holidaymakers wanting to live out a true Puglian holiday on the coastline, the exclusive Sea Breeze and Fine Food experience in fascinating Pescoluse is a must.

Castel Del Monte

Its architecture and its history are the strengths of this magical Swabian Castle. It is located in a strategic position, built directly on a rocky hill where it seemed to dominate the Kingdom of Sicily. Castel del Monte is well known for its shape which tells a lot about the founder Frederick II of Swabia or Hohenstaufen.

Commissioned by Frederick II of Swabia in 1240 near Santa Maria del Monte, in Apulia, this fortress is a masterpiece of Mediaeval architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Castel del Monte seems to be isolated and far from other important sites, but actually, its position is very strategic. Indeed, the castle is located on the road between Andria and the Castle of Garagnone, of which today there’re ruins. Other two important sites for the Kingdom. On the border of the National Park of Alta Murgia, Castel del Monte is also very close to other points of interest. The Park of Alta Murgia is, for sure, one of the main forests in Puglia and it’s the perfect place to practice trekking, hiking, walking, and cycling.
